Cyber-crime in the health industry

An overview of cyber-crime for health professionals and how you can protect your practice

June 19, 2022

We probably don’t need any more reminders about just how much of a threat cyber-crime is today, yet it feels like every other day we’re subject to news of yet another organisation being targeted. And whether you’re an occupational therapist, chiropractor, psychologist, or massage therapist, it might be easy for you to think your practice will never be a target, but the reality is, few businesses are immune to the likelihood of cyber-attacks in the present environment. Here's an overview of the cyber-crime landscape for health professionals, and why now might be the time to start taking cyber safety seriously.

Why might health practices be a target?

As we’ve mentioned, few businesses are immune to the threat of cyber-crime, and health practices are no exception. If you store clients’ personal information, bank account details, and health fund details, this information can often be enough of a lure for cyber criminals, as it provides them with an easy avenue for identity theft. In addition, small businesses may not have the resources to invest in sophisticated cybersecurity systems in the same way larger corporations may be able to. This not only makes them a profitable target, but also an easy one, as their digital infrastructure may be easier to access compared to that of larger organisations.

Preventing cyber-crime and safeguarding your business?

So, what can you do to safeguard your practice and prevent falling victim to a cyber-attack? There are several ways you can help take control of your practice’s cybersecurity, such as:

Install appropriate security software such as antivirus and malware software on all your devices and keep them regularly updated. Limit access to your physical premises, systems, and devices to only those who need it. Backup your data regularly to reduce the damage if a breach does occur. Raise awareness in employees by teaching them to identify phishing emails/scams, and by educating them on the importance of strong passwords. Establish good habits among your staff members e.g. by locking computers each time they step away from their desks; and Ensure that you use ‘smarter passwords” and where possible multi-factor authentication.
